F99 Inclination Sensor Increases Energy Yield in Concentrated Solar Power Applications

2024-02-22

F99 inclination sensor

Whether in machines and plants, mobile equipment, or solar power systems—inclination sensors are used wherever inclination angles have to be reliably measured. With the F99 series, Pepperl+Fuchs offers a range of inclination sensors for a variety of applications. They measure angles with ±0.15° accuracy and therefor stand for highest precision. With their rugged design, the F99 series inclination sensors offer a wide range of application possibilities, indoors as well as in outdoor areas and harsh environments. One area of application is the field of renewable energies. In Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants, for example, the F99 series inclination sensors can help to increase the energy yield.

Rugged and Suitable for Outdoor Use

The F99 inclination sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs are based on a sophisticated two-piece mounting concept, which makes them extremely sturdy. A rugged metal mounting bracket provides the sensor module with impact protection. Due to this design, sensor replacement is quick and easy. Once installed, the bracket can stay in place—there is no need for new adjustment or calibration. With IP69 degree of protection, it is ideally suited for applications in harsh conditions. This also includes environments with extreme temperatures and weather conditions, such as in the desert.

Toward the Sun

In CSP applications, there are countless mirrors reflecting sunlight onto a receiver.

Due to their rugged design, the F99 inclination sensors are an ideal solution for inclination measurement in concentrated solar power applications. CSP plants generate energy from solar heat and can typically be found in regions with a lot of sunlight. These power plants have countless mirrors, known as heliostats, which concentrate the solar radiation onto a receiver or receiver area. A heat medium inside the receiver is heated by the sunlight and drives a steam or gas turbine, which in turn generates power. The more sunlight, the more power can be generated.

To avoid scattering loss from inaccurate mirror alignment, inclination sensors detect the inclination angles of the mirrors. The F99 series’ rugged design and extended temperature range of –40 °C … +85 °C make it perfect for this application, especially when the CSP plant is located in the desert with large temperature fluctuations. The inclination sensors can withstand both the heat and the cold, while reliably and precisely measuring the inclination angle. This allows the mirrors to be perfectly aligned with the sun’s rays so that as much solar radiation as possible can be converted to power. With this, the F99 inclination sensors contribute to increased effectiveness and efficiency in CSP plants.
